Cold front brings sudden winter return and snow threat

The unofficial start to spring is taking a sudden, icy detour. A potent cold front is barreling through the region early Monday, March 16, and US News Hub Misryoum confirms that the pleasant weather we’ve been enjoying is about to be replaced by biting winds and a genuine threat of snow showers. We are currently under a wind advisory, with forecasters tracking gusts that could reach up to 45 mph. It is the kind of day that reminds you why we never quite put the winter coats away in the closet just yet.

Temperatures are going to be on a steady decline throughout the afternoon, dropping from the mid-30s early in the day into the upper 20s by the time the sun begins to set. It is going to be a sharp, noticeable chill for anyone heading out.

While most main roads are expected to remain wet, the plummeting mercury means we should all watch for slick spots developing in the evening. Accumulation is likely to stick to the grass, but don’t be surprised if the pavement gets a bit tricky as the cold front forces temperatures to dip to a low of 20 degrees overnight.

Looking beyond the immediate freeze, there is a silver lining in the forecast. The National Weather Service in Wilmington suggests that this cold front won’t overstay its welcome. By Wednesday, a noticeable warming trend begins to take hold, pushing us toward highs near 48 degrees, and by Saturday, we could be looking at a much more comfortable 71 degrees. It is a classic example of our erratic seasonal shifts, testing our patience before the real spring warmth finally settles in for good.

Honestly, keep an eye on those Tuesday morning commutes. With a high of only 31 degrees predicted for Tuesday, the lingering moisture from Monday night could easily turn into localized icy patches, making for a slow drive into the office or school. Stay weather aware as this cold front passes.
