Heavy Rain Causes Deadly Roof Collapses in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province

Tragedy struck eastern Afghanistan on Monday night. After intense, sustained downpours, the roofs of several mud-brick houses gave way across Nangarhar province, claiming the lives of at least five people.

Provincial officials confirmed the incident on Tuesday, noting that the collapses occurred on the outskirts of the Sherzad, Khogyani, and Haska Meyna districts. Beyond the five fatalities, four other residents were pulled from the rubble and rushed to local health centers for treatment.

What stands out here is the persistent vulnerability of the region’s infrastructure. In many of Afghanistan’s remote areas, homes are still predominantly built from mud. When adverse weather rolls in—especially heavy rain—these structures simply cannot withstand the pressure, often leading to tragic outcomes like the one we saw this week.

But the reality is that this isn’t an isolated event. The country has been hammered by severe weather lately. Over the past 11 days alone, a series of rainstorms, flash floods, and landslides have been devastating, leaving nearly 110 people dead and another 160 injured across various provinces. It’s a harsh reminder of how quickly seasonal weather can turn into a humanitarian crisis in these communities.
