Knights shocked as Tigers blitz—fans all say the same thing after the 16-0 start

There’s a particular kind of silence that follows a massive loss—especially when the team was supposed to be right in the mix.

Newcastle walked into Sunday’s clash knowing a win would take them level on points with league leaders Penrith. That plan lasted… what, 20 minutes? Because the Tigers slammed the door early, racing into a 16-0 lead inside the first quarter-hour and completely shifting the momentum.

By halftime, it was a statement: 28-4. And honestly, once you’re that far behind with an entire half still to play, the story stops being “how do they respond?” and starts becoming “how bad can it get?” The Knights did manage some moments, but the damage was already done.

Leading 28-4 at halftime, the hosts kept cutting them open in the second half—adding another two tries as Newcastle suffered their second defeat of the season. With a crowd of 15,221 behind them, the Tigers pounced from the start, scoring through Sunia Turvua and Api Koroisau.

What really stands out here is how fast the match unravelled for the Knights. Dom Young pulled one back for Newcastle when he contorted to score in the corner, but Patrick Herbert and Jahream Bula then pushed the Tigers out to a 24-point buffer at the break.

In the second stanza, Newcastle had no answer—even running into a howling gale didn’t slow the Tigers down. Turuva completed his treble in the 54th minute, after another classic Adam Doueihi pass. Then Jeral Skelton’s in-goal error gifted Dane Gagai a try, before Bula was bobbed up again to make it 36-10 after 61 minutes.

Koroisau’s dummy-half trickery set up Terrell May for a rare try, and Newcastle—already trailing by 32 points—managed only consolation tries late through Fletcher Hunt and Trey Mooney.

And while the scoreboard did the talking on-field, the real blow came from the comments. Beaney said: “Knights success early in on the year has been a huge fluke. Pretenders.” Hawk Report added: “This is peak 2025 Knights playing… The injuries are big but some of these plays are just dumb.” The Unsportsman reacted: “Knights wanted the Panthers after going 4-1… well they got the team who is currently the second best team in the comp and got flogged. Big reality check!” Sierra simply said: “The Knights fans are quiet now.”

Even with the effort from Newcastle’s late tries, nothing could cut through the bigger picture: the Tigers registered their first win at the venue since August 2024—and for a lot of fans, this result feels like the one that finally made the season’s early hype look questionable.
