Manchester United defender unlikely to play for rest of 2025/26 season

There has been an unfortunate reality for one of Manchester United’s most promising young defenders in recent months. With the season entering its decisive phase, the teenager’s campaign looks set to end earlier than expected.
Harry Amass is not expected to feature again this season despite edging closer to full fitness following a serious hamstring injury, dealing a blow to both his development and any hopes of late involvement, as reported by BBC Sport.
The 19-year-old picked up the injury just days into his loan spell at Norwich City, having joined the Championship side in January in search of regular senior minutes, but what was meant to be a crucial opportunity quickly turned into a frustrating setback.
Prior to that move, Harry Amass had been impressing during the first half of the campaign at Sheffield Wednesday, where his performances at left-back caught attention. His progress earned him the switch to Norwich, but he managed just a brief 15-minute cameo against Coventry City before sustaining the injury in training, which was later confirmed to be a significant hamstring issue.
United opted to recall the youngster so he could undergo rehabilitation at Carrington, a decision that ultimately ruled out any extended involvement with Norwich during the business end of the season.
Norwich boss Alex Neil Clement addressed the situation earlier this month, making it clear the club had hoped for a different outcome. “We wanted things to be different with Harry [Amass], but Manchester United are the owners of the play and they decided not to come here for his rehab and not to have Harry in these weeks.
“We wish it was a different situation and I don’t want to go into what Harry wanted, that’s for him to say but it is what it is; they are the owners of the player and they decided to keep him there until the end of the season,” While Harry Amass is now back training outdoors and stepping up his recovery, a return to Norwich for their final four league fixtures has already been ruled out, closing the door on any late contribution at senior level this term.
There had been a slim possibility of involvement with United’s Under-21 side in the upcoming Premier League 2 play-offs, but that scenario is also considered unlikely as the club carefully manages his fitness.
The expectation internally is that Amass will be fully available for pre-season in mid-July, giving him a fresh platform to push for involvement under United’s new permanent manager ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Signed from Watford in 2023, Amass has long been viewed as one of the most exciting full-back prospects at the club. With Luke Shaw continuing to manage fitness issues and uncertainty surrounding depth in the left-back position, especially with the likely departure of Tyrell Malacia, the upcoming pre-season could prove pivotal for the teenager as he looks to re-establish momentum.
