The Government of Ghana is set to officially hand over the Damang Mine to Damang Gold Mine Limited, a subsidiary of Engineers and Planners, owned by businessman Ibrahim Mahama, in a transition aimed at sustaining operations and protecting jobs in the mining sector. The transfer, scheduled for April 18, 2026, will be facilitated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources through the Minerals Commission, which will also outline the terms of the lease agreement to the new operator. The move follows a decision by Gold Fields Limited to discontinue operations at the Damang site.

Despite this, mining activities resumed in May 2025 to ensure continuity during the transition period. Gold Fields completed a comprehensive feasibility study in December 2025 and submitted it to the government to support efforts to extend the lifespan of the mine. Over the past year, the company has worked closely with government and a designated Transition Team to prepare the site for a smooth takeover.

Both government and Gold Fields have emphasized the need to maintain sustainable operations, safeguard employment, support host communities, and preserve the mine’s contribution to the national economy. Gold Fields, which has operated in Ghana for more than three decades, indicated that decisions regarding the mine’s future ownership structure rest solely with the Government of Ghana, in line with the country’s mining laws. Since 2000, the company has invested approximately $5 billion in its Damang and Tarkwa operations and contributed about $2.9 billion to the state through taxes, royalties, and dividends.

It currently employs over 7,000 people in Ghana, with the vast majority being Ghanaian nationals. The transition is expected to mark a new phase in the management of the Damang Mine, with stakeholders hopeful of sustained productivity and economic benefits.

A senior lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at University of Cape Coast in the Central Region, Dr Kasim Abdulai, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for introducing the Free Primary Healthcare programme, describing it as a timely and people-centered policy. Speaking on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra FM 100.5 FM on April 17, 2026, Dr. Abdulai praised the government for aligning with global efforts aimed at improving access to primary healthcare.

According to him, Free Primary Healthcare is a widely accepted global policy direction, with many countries encouraged to adopt systems that ensure citizens have access to essential health services without financial burden. Dr. Abdulai noted that one of the most commendable aspects of the programme is the incorporation of nutrition, which he described as central to improving public health outcomes.

He emphasised that many illnesses affecting people today are closely linked to poor lifestyle choices and unhealthy eating habits. “The food we eat plays a major role in our health. A lot of the sicknesses we see today are a result of poor dieting and unhealthy lifestyles,” he explained.

The nutrition expert further praised President Mahama’s advice on healthy diets, stating that it reflects a strong understanding of preventive healthcare. He stressed the need for Ghanaians to take nutrition seriously, as proper eating habits can help prevent diseases and improve overall well-being. Dr.

Abdulai concluded that the inclusion of nutrition in the Free Primary Healthcare Programme is a “wise step” that will contribute significantly to disease prevention and national health improvement.

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS) has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, recording nineteen arrests and seizing dozens of equipment in two intelligence-led operations along the Offin River. The operations, carried out by a NAiMOS taskforce based at Manso Adubia, targeted illegal mining hotspots at Droso and Eniamoah within the Amansie South enclave, in what authorities describe as a decisive effort to reclaim the river from galamsey activities. In the first operation on April 12, 2026, NAiMOS operatives acted on intelligence gathered from local sources, moving swiftly to Droso where illegal mining was actively ongoing along the Offin River.

The taskforce encountered miners operating close to the waterbody with machinery in use. Nineteen suspects, made up of both men and women aged between 23 and 35, were arrested at the scene. Others fled upon sighting the security team.

Items retrieved during the raid included eight water pumping machines, five motorbikes, an excavator monitor, and an excavator key. A day later, on April 13, the taskforce launched a second operation at Eniamoah, near Ntoboroso, following further intelligence on illegal mining activities. Upon arrival, operatives observed extensive galamsey operations along the river.

However, miners abandoned the site and fled before they could be apprehended. The team seized fifteen motorbikes believed to belong to the fleeing operators, highlighting the scale and organization of the illegal mining network in the area. NAiMOS officials say the scale of activity uncovered at Eniamoah underscores the growing pressure on the Offin River from illegal mining operations.

In response, the Secretariat has announced plans to deploy Blue Water Guards to intensify patrols within the Eniamoah and Ntoboroso areas, aimed at sustaining enforcement efforts and preventing a return of illegal miners. The Secretariat emphasized that the twin operations demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-sharing among agencies in tackling illegal mining. NAiMOS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a strong operational presence along the Offin River until galamsey activities are completely eradicated, sending a clear signal that the river is no longer a safe haven for illegal miners.

The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) has intensified efforts to strengthen engagement with industrial operators, as its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mary Awusi, led a high-level delegation on a working visit to two Free Zone enterprises (FZEs) at the Tema Industrial Area of the Greater Accra Region. The visit, which took place on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, forms part of the Authority’s broader strategy to assess operational challenges faced by companies and reinforce its commitment to industrial growth and investor support.

The delegation first visited Aburi Energy, a renewable energy firm involved in the production of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and other clean energy solutions. Since commencing operations in July 2025, the company has employed about 240 local workers and operates from a 30,000-square-metre facility. It has also exported over 300 containers valued at approximately $12 million, with projections to scale up production capacity to 4 gigawatts by the end of 2026.

Dr. Awusi commended the company for its rapid growth and contribution to Ghana’s export sector, while urging management to balance automation with job creation to maximise employment opportunities. The team also visited TetraCore Gas Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the TetraCore Energy Group, which supplies compressed natural gas to industries via truck distribution.

The company plays a key role in promoting cleaner and more efficient energy solutions within Ghana’s industrial landscape. During the engagements, GFZA officials toured facilities, interacted with management, and gained insights into production processes and operational capacity. Dr.

Awusi praised both companies for supporting Ghana’s industrialisation agenda and reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for Free Zones enterprises to thrive. She was accompanied by senior officials of the Authority, including Deputy CEO of Operations, Mr. Lateef Apau Wiredu, and other directors and technical staff.

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has raised alarm over what he describes as growing instances of luxury expenditure within Ghana’s pension administration system, warning that such practices threaten the financial security of contributors. He cited the reported procurement of seven Land Cruiser vehicles at GHS 15 million as a key example, questioning whether such expenditure aligns with the core mandate of protecting pension funds. “Pension funds are not instruments for prestige projects or executive comfort,” he stressed, adding that every cedi spent must directly contribute to improving retirement outcomes for Ghanaian workers.

Mr Assafuah argued that decisions of this nature must be subjected to strict scrutiny, including verification of procurement processes, board approvals and demonstrated necessity. He warned that failure to uphold these standards risks weakening public confidence in the system. He is therefore calling on oversight institutions, including the Auditor-General and anti-corruption bodies, to examine such expenditures and ensure full accountability.
