Knights shocker leaves fans stunned — and a familiar backlash hits fast
The reaction was immediate. Not the polite kind either.
Newcastle came into Sunday’s clash knowing a win would take them level on points with league leaders Penrith. Instead, it unraveled fast—so fast that the Tigers were already carving them up before the crowd had even settled.
Inside 20 minutes, the Tigers had raced to a 16-0 lead. The damage didn’t pause. At halftime, the hosts were leading 28-4, and by then it was clear something had gone wrong in a hurry.
What really stands out is how the second half kept exposing the same issues. The Knights were cut open time and time again as the Tigers piled on further tries. Leading the charge early, Sunia Turvua and Api Koroisau gave the Tigers momentum, and the in-form winger Dom Young pulled one back for Newcastle—contorting his frame to score in the corner.
But the Knights couldn’t keep hold of the fight for long. Patrick Herbert and Jahream Bula pushed the Tigers back out, giving them a 24-point lead at the break. Then came the weather—running into a howling gale—and still, the Tigers didn’t slow down.
Turuva completed his treble in the 54th minute after receiving another classic Adam Doueihi pass. Jeral Skelton’s in-goal error then gifted Dane Gagai a try, and Wests were far from finished. Bula was bobbed up again after 61 minutes to make it 36-10, before Koroisau’s dummy-half trickery helped Terrell May grab a rare try.
Trailing by 32 points, the Knights did manage a couple of consolation tries late. Fletcher Hunt and Trey Mooney crossed, but it didn’t change the bigger picture—especially for Campbelltown faithful.
Backed by a crowd of 15,221, the Tigers registered their first win at the venue since August 2024. And on social media, fans didn’t hold back. Beaney said: “Knights success early in on the year has been a huge fluke. Pretenders.”
Hawk Report added: “This is peak 2025 Knights playing… The injuries are big but some of these plays are just dumb.”
The Unsportsman reacted: “Knights wanted the Panthers after going 4-1… well they got the team who is currently the second best team in the comp and got flogged. Big reality check!”
And Sierra simply said: “The Knights fans are quiet now.”
It’s the kind of result that turns a season narrative overnight. Still, the timing raises questions—because Newcastle’s second defeat of the season came with the league leaders waiting in the same conversation.
